Meet Morgan and "Why Kelp Farming is Pretty Much the Coolest"

Our ocean farmed kelp is grown by farmers in Maine like our co-founder Morgan-Lea Fogg! We're just days away from kelp harvesting, which means that every day, our farmers are checking water temperatures and checking on their kelp crops to make sure they're as long and as healthy as possible before they're harvested.
Morgan-Lea Fogg
Kelp is a "zero input crop", which means that it:
Requires no fresh water
Requires no dry land
Fertilizer/feed free
Kelp also sequesters 5x carbon from water than land based plants do from the air
while also reinvigorating shoreline ecosystems for 100s of species! So yeah, kelp farming is pretty much the coolest.
We sat down with our co-founder and kelp farmer Morgan-Lea for a few minutes to ask her about kelp farming.
Why did you get into Kelp Farming?
I had started to learn about seaweeds and sustainable ocean farming just after I read a book called Comfortably Unaware by Richard Oppenlander that explains how what we choose to eat is not only killing us, but the planet. I remember getting quite emotional while reading the shocking facts Oppenlander gives about how we are destroying the Amazon forests for agriculture, and how we are running out of clean, fresh water. I completed the book, and immediately changed my personal habits around the food I consumed. I had always been a fairly healthy eater, but I was becoming a conscious eater. When I realized I could farm kelp by going back home to Maine where I had grown up and provide people and the planet with a healthy, renewable sources of food, fertilizers, animals feeds, biomaterials and biofuels, I was over the moon excited to dive in.
What do you love about Kelp Farming?
Maybe I shouldn’t say this out loud, but I do think the unpredictability of ocean farming is quite exciting. With any kind of farming, so much is left up to nature. Sometimes, I’m cursing the tide and the weather because it’s making our lives that much harder, but I also think that’s where it gets a little fun. I’ve also really enjoyed learning about our oceans - what they are capable of and how things work together. As a farmer, you’re not just learning and understanding your crop, but you have to have a great understanding of nature and the planet as a whole it is all connected after all. Lastly, I’ll say there is a great sense of pride that comes from growing and nurturing a small seed or spore into a full blown plant that can then be used to feed and nurture thousands and potentially millions of people.
How do you see the future of kelp farming?
I hope that as humans, we get a better understanding of all farming and how we use the resources we have available to us. As far as kelp and ocean farming, I hope that it continues to pick up momentum, especially here in the US. I hope people continue to get involved by either eating more seaweed, educating people about the benefits of kelp farming, or by developing more creative ways to use seaweeds. I often envision a day when Jake (my fiance and partner at Nautical Farms) and I can hop into our (future) mobile home and road trip along our coastlines to visit hundreds of ocean farming friends and their farms.
